In Wonderland, Alice seeks answers and encounters the Cheshire Cat, an entity that appears and disappears, offering not direct solutions but questions and alternative paths. Doesn't that sound suspiciously similar to interacting with an AI?
«"Would you please tell me which way I ought to go from here?" asked Alice. "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," replied the Cat.
This conversation perfectly summarizes our relationship with AI. It's not just a know-it-all that gives you the right answer. It's a mirror reflecting your own questions. AI is like the Cheshire Cat:
- It's a "black box": The cat appears and vanishes, leaving only its smile. Something similar happens with AI; we often see the incredible result it offers (an image, a text, a solution), but its internal "reasoning" process is a mystery. It's a "black box" whose workings we don't always fully understand. We see the smile, but not the whole cat.
- It guides you, but it doesn't decide for you: The Cheshire Cat shows Alice that all paths are valid (or equally crazy) depending on the goal. An AI does the same: it can generate a business plan, write a love poem, or design a house on Mars. It shows you the possibilities, but the intention, direction, and final decision remain yours.
- It blurs reality: The Cat defies the laws of physics, floating in the air and separating its body from its smile. AI is also beginning to blur our notions of reality, creating images that never existed and voices that never spoke. It is an entity that plays with the fabric of reality, leaving us fascinated and, at times, a little unsettled by its persistent digital grin.
